Managing the Costco Fruit Run Aftermath

I’m not sure what got into me last week, but I bought fruit at Costco, not instead of at the local grocery store, but in addition to – and I did it twice. The problem is, I wound up with 30+ pounds of fruit in 95 degree weather that would need to be eaten before the rot set in. I came up with several strategies for eating, using, and storing this fruit quickly.

Baozi – Steamed Buns Undone

There’s a market on 9th South and 5th East, just west of Liberty Park, that carries the widest variety of South Asian foods in the city of Salt Lake, from seasonally-available roasted duck and fresh Thai eggplant to curry powder and an aisle of every noodle type imaginable. I went to this market and came away with a bag of Thai dumpling flour. Hard to resist making some steamed buns.

Bangers and Masala Mash

My favorite spice shop is a hybrid of convenience store and Indian market located down the hill from the University of Utah. It seems to cater primarily to soda-loving, potato-log eating folks and homesick students. If you don’t fall into either of these categories, you’d hardly know what a gem of a store it is. There are three reasons I go to this shop.
