Sweet Limes – New tastes and new friends

Lemons?

Think again. These are sweet Palestinian limes…

When I went to the Mexican market the other day, I saw some for the first time.  I picked one up and nonchalantly tossed it into my cart to try later.  I looked up to see an older couple watching me.  I winked and walked away.

Moments later, I felt a tap on my shoulder.  It turns out that the couple wanted to make sure I knew what I was getting myself into – apparently, they disagreed on whether sweet limes taste any good.  The fact is, they smell like Pledge furniture polish – in a good way, of course.

They asked the produce guy to cut one up for me – something I’ve only seen done at farmer’s markets (not supermarkets) – and then watched eagerly as I chomped down on a wedge.

They were delicious!  Not quite as sweet as an orange, and not as bitter as a lime.  I think they’d make a great summer drink.

And the couple, once they discovered that I speak Spanish, started talking about some of Mexico’s regional delicacies. I learned a lot, made some new friends, and tried a great new fruit. All in all, a great afternoon.

Have you had sweet limes?  What did you think?
